How Hemodialysis Works

RG Pharmaceutica-How hemodialysis works

Hemodialysis uses a special filter called a dialyzer that functions as an artificial kidney to filter blood. The dialyzer is a cylinder connected to the hemodialysis machine. During treatment, your blood comes through tubes to the dialyzer, which filters and removes excess salt and water. Then the cleaned blood flows through another set of tubes and back into your body. The hemodialysis machine monitors blood flow and removes wastes from the dialyzer.

Hemodialysis is usually performed three times a week. Each treatment lasts from 3 to 5 hours or more. During treatment, you can read, write, sleep, talk, or watch television.
How to prepare

You need to create an access to your bloodstream several days before first hemodialysis of the treatment. You might have to stay overnight in the hospital, but many patients will have access without admit in hospital. This access provides an efficient way to transport blood from his body to the dialyzer and back to the body without causing discomfort. The two main types of access are a fistula and graft.
